There is a tendency that we have to categorize things. This, if nothing else, makes it easier for us to think about them. In effect, if something is in Category A, we need not worry about it vis-à-vis Categories B, C. . .X., even if there are similarities or even overlaps. We like to have this mental shorthand. We “know” what something is. We have placed it where it needs to be in our mental landscape. And so we can think about something else, whether it is the Lions or Lindsay Lohan.

A simple way to think about this categorizing tendency is to consider the old saying, “It’s like comparing apples and oranges.” That, of course, is just not done. They’re different.
