2007 Audi RS4
By , Senior EditorKevin's BioWrite Kevin

Too much power can corrupt.  Just look at the headlines and you know that our leaders are mostly looking out for themselves and not those they serve.  But power can be a good thing, if managed properly and put to good use, as one can quickly learn when spending time behind the wheel of the 2007 Audi RS4.

You have to start off with a solid foundation, of course, and the RS4 takes its roots from one of the most respected vehicles on the market: the A4.  With the foundation in place, engineers removed the meager 4- and 6-cylinder engines commonly found in the A4 and opted instead for a 4.2-liter V8, the same one used in the S4, although its attitude is a bit more sinister thanks to the addition of the “S” button located on the upper portion of the instrument panel. Activation of the “S” mode changes the demeanor of the engine by quickening throttle response, opening additional valves in the mufflers and intake to allow better breathing, while also changing the exhaust note to something more akin to a muscle car.  A light touch of the throttle brings all 420 horses under the hood to abrupt and welcoming attention.

Keeping all of this power under control are vital pieces of technology, including the latest generation of Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, tuned to deliver 40% of power to the front wheels and 60% to the rear wheels during normal driving conditions, providing a performance-oriented driving experience. The power is transmitted through a 6-speed manual transmission designed with short gear throws and improved shift comfort.  The aluminum suspension, complete with a four-link axle up front and trapezoidal-link in the rear, keeps the RS4 firmly planted.  While the addition of Dynamic Ride Control helps to keep body roll and pitch in check via automatic changes in the dampers by way of a control valve.

Inside and out, the RS4 carries on the tradition set by the A4’s clean, modern appearance, with the addition of more aggressive wheel arches, integrated rear spoiler, standard 19-in. wheels and RS specific bumpers and grille.  The interior features RS4-specific Recaro seats, carbon fiber trim and milled aluminum door handles and gear shifter.

The entry price for this a thrill ride on four wheels is $66,000.  For what you get for the money, it’s a good thing.
