Cutting Fluids for Various Workpiece Materials

What: Lineup of lubricant technology for machining and grinding hard metals

Important to note: “We have developed something that is completely new and unique to the industry,” said Tina Hunter, Automotive Product Manager, CIMCOOL. “These fluids work best when really pushed to the limit. The tougher the operation, the better results we see.” She added, “They have outperformed some popular heavy-duty, sulfo-chlorinated oils by up to 300%.” 
Pertinent data: Among the synthetic fluids, which don’t contain chlorine, are the following. CIMTECH 627, a water-based fluid for heavy-duty machining and grinding of exotic alloys. Offers better lubricity than sulfo-chlorinated soluble oils. CIMTECH 609-E can be used in operations such as hard metal valve grinding, where it can help reduce chatter, decrease wheel loading, and provide a good finish. CIMTECH 610 is for titanium and hard metal machining, yet it can also be used for aluminum alloy machining. 

CIMCOOL fluids developed for machining don’t include chlorine. Various grades can handle tough metal removal operations.


Internal Cylindrical Grinder

What: Studer CT550 internal/universal cylindrical grinder

Important to note: The CT550 is designed for medium-sized workpieces. It can accommodate up to three inline grinding spindles (high-frequency, belt-driven, and external grinding wheel). Because of the modular, flexible arrangement, the machine can be configured for one-offs as well as large-scale production operations. The types of parts handled by the grinder include die plates, spring collets, toolholding fixtures, hydraulic components, and thread ring gages. Materials that can be ground include tool steel, carbide, ceramics, and glass.
Pertinent data: The axes travels are: X, 520 mm and Z, 250 mm. The manual B-axis setting angle is ±1°. The center height above the table is 1,500 mm. The maximum part length is 650 mm; the maximum grinding length is 150 mm. The maximum workhead speed is 150 mm. The diameter of the high-frequency spindle ranges from 80 to 120 mm. The belt-driven spindle: 80 mm. The external grinding wheel: 305 mm. The control is a Fanuc 310i-A. The grinder features a Granitan S103 bed for rigidity and thermal stability. 

 

The Studer CT550 features a modular design so that it can be setup for small-lot or high-production grinding applications.


High Speed Electrode Machining Center

What: The TT1-400A machining center for electrode production
Who: Sodick Inc. (sodick.com)
Important to note: Sodick has been producing high-precision machining centers since 1988, and it introduced linear motors on its machines—in place of ballscrews—back in 1999. Since ’99, it has produced more than 30,000 machines using linear motors. All of which is to say that the company has a good amount of experience in the production of machines like the TT1-400A. While the machine is built in Japan, it is notable that the LN3X controller used was developed by Sodick America in Silicon Valley, in the company’s facility in San Jose.
Pertinent data: The TT1-400A has X, Y, Z-axis travels of 15.75, 9.84, and 11.81 in., respectively. There are linear motors on all axes. The maximum acceleration rate is up to 1.2 G. The spindle, fitted with an HSK-E25 toolholder, can handle tools up to 0.236 in. in diameter. The spindle operates at up to 40,000 rpm. The maximum feedrate is 1,440 ipm. The machine uses Heidenhain glass scales (heidenhain.us) in conjunction with the linear motors. The machine’s footprint is 118.1 x 153.54 in.

The Sodick TT1-400A is engineered for milling graphite and copper electrodes.
