Press-loading Boom


What: A better, lighter way to load presses with carbon fiber Z- and T-booms.
Who: Bilsing Automation ( www.bilsing-automation.com)
Important to Know: Bilsing has developed these Z- and T-booms using a high-strength, reinforced carbon fiber composite material rather than the traditional steel. The T-boom elements are assembled using the company’s Bond+Bolt fastening method, which means that the joints are both adhesively bonded, then secured with steel bolts through the core. According to Bilsing, this provides an attachment that is not only as strong as steel welded joints, but with a lower production cost.
Pertinent Data: The carbon fiber structures are available separately, but can be joined together with one another or with other booms using an automatic tool interface or other connections. In some applications, multiple end-of-arm tooling devices are plugged into the Z-boom. One advantage of the carbon fiber booms is that they hold their original structures better than steel, which means there is improved repeatability and consistency.

 

Multiple-spindle Rotary Indexers

 


What: A series of single- and dual-axis multi-spindle rotary indexers—available in dual, triple and quad spindle configurations—that allow improved productivity in machining operations including milling, drilling, boring, tapping, and reaming.

Important to Know: Hardinge has actually been involved in the development and manufacturer of equipment of this type since the late 19th century, so they have more than a small amount of experience in this space. The rotary indexers produced have a collet-ready spindle that can handle standard collets, Sure-Grip expanding collets, step chucks, jaw chucks, and face or fixture plates without the use of an adapter. There are robust, dual-bearing spindles used so that heavy axial and radial loads can be handled. A maximum runout of 0.0002-in. TIR is the Hardinge standard.
Pertinent Data: The multi-spindle rotary indexer can increase overall production by producing more parts per hour, which can result in lower cost-per-part. Advantages include optimized spindle utilization; the ability to run two, three or four parts at a time rather than just one; reduced X- and Z-axis tool movements for reduced cycle times; and the ability to eliminate the need for additional machining operations.
 

Low-Foaming Cutting Fluid

 


What: VPLFC, a heavy-duty, non-chlorinated, semi-synthetic coolant for high-pressure systems (1,000 psi and higher). Part of the Walter Valenite line of ValCool cutting fluids.

Important to Know: VPLFC facilitates long tool life, better surface finishes, and reduced consumption. It provides long-term emulsion stability and excellent foam control. Reduced foam means enhanced lubricity. The fact that it is non-chlorinated means that better surface finishes can be achieved.
Pertinent Data: VPLFC helps boost overall system cleanliness. It maintains stable pH levels, which means that it has an extended useful life. It is available in sizes from five-gallon pails to 55-gallon drums.
