Seat Bearing Assemblies

Custom modular bearing assemblies with precision ball or roller bearings and plastic or steel retainers are available in a variety of sizes and materials for applications including seat tracks from Hartford Technologies (www.hartfordtechnologies.com; Rocky Hill, CT).

Laser Diode Array

The SIRILAS laser diode array from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (www.osram-os.com) boasts a heat sink on which the laser bar is centered. A simple channel design insures the water passages are not blocked by corrosion over time, and reduces thermal resistance. An integrated lens produces an almost parallel beam with a typical vertical divergence of one degree. Combining multiple pumping modules make it possible to pump high-power solid-state lasers that can be used as an alternative to CO2 lasers for material processing, like the one shown from RayTools (www.raytools.ch).

Submicron Bore Sizing

The SV-1005 vertical CNC honing system has an integrated Etamic air-gauging system for closed-loop control that results in accuracies of 0.25µm on diameters of 3 to 65 mm without operator intervention. The system, available from Sunnen Products Co. (www.sunnen.com; St. Louis, MO), is said to be applicable to components including valve bodies, fuel injectors, gears, and turbocharger housings. A patent has been applied for the tool-feed control that the system deploys. The gauging system is used while the part is still fixtured on the machine. It permits achieving the accuracy of the bore diameter and geometry.

Triaxial Accelerometers for Dummies

The Vibration Design Center of Measurement Specialties, Inc. (www.meas-spec.com) has three new miniature accelerometers designed specifically for automotive crash testing. The Model 68C complies with requirements for seismic mass location in the World Side Impact Dummy, and has replaceable sensors for reduced maintenance costs. The Model 63 is more compact, features through-hole mounting, and is designed for impact, sled, and on-vehicle testing. Model 53 is adhesively mounted and designed for extreme impact and road test applications where the sensor is likely to be destroyed.

Roll Feed System

Bosch Rexroth’s (www.boschrexroth-us.com) IndraMotion roll feed system is a ready-made motion control solution for roll feed applications. It contains all of the pre-defined, user-activated functions for specific applications like roll feed and a flying cutoff. The user need only set the length, speed, and quantity parameters. It’s available in three versions with open interface technology for discrete I/O and standard fieldbus protocols.

Fabric Roof

ASC’s (www.ascglobal.com) Sliding Fabric Roof System will be available on the 2008 Jeep Liberty SUV. The bi-directional, fully-adjustable system can be opened and closed while the vehicle is in motion like a sunroof, but provides more than four times the open area of a standard sunroof. ASC spent more than two years developing the roof system, which it says can withstand severe environmental conditions, including frost, snow, heat, and sand.

Rearview Mirror with LCD Display

Gentex Corp.’s (www.gentex.com) integrated rearview-mirror camera display system features an interior mirror containing a 2.4-in. LCD display that works in conjunction with a rear-mounted video camera to provide real-time images of the scene directly behind the vehicle. The video image appears automatically through the auto-dimming mirror’s reflective surface when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The ability to display the image through the mirror’s surface is made possible by Gentex’s “transflective” coatings and lighting technologies. It is available on the Mazda CX-9.

Vision System

Banner Engineering Corp. (www.bannerengineering.com) has developed a vision sensor system with a compact, metal, IP68-rated camera that can be located anywhere that water, dust or other contaminants might exist to provide improved error-proofing, assembly verification and flaw detection.

Vacuum Cartridge

COAX ejector technology developed by PIAB Vacuum Products (www.piab.com) for material handling systems uses a decentralized vacuum system which can be easily integrated into the body of various devices with multistage vacuum cartridge capability. They are said to provide up to three times the vacuum flow compared to traditional systems with the same air consumption through the use of compressed air which is forced through a number of specially-designed nozzles.

Soldering Robot

Dispense Works Inc.’s (www.dispenseworks.com) 3101 Soldering Robot system features pre-programmed motions, solder feed, pullback and timing. Simply align the robot to the first point using the Jog & Tech routine and the fixturing files do the rest. Soldering points can be defined via keyboard inputs, built-in step and repeat arrays, or a .DXF/.PLT CAD file import.
