U.S.P.S. Getting Green

By: Gary S. Vasilash

12. May 2010

Here's a laudable goal for any company or organization: “Quite simply, we want to be the best — best neighbor, best business partner and the best place to work when it comes to sustainable practices.” that John E. Potter, U.S. Postmaster General. And they're putting substance behind their efforts vis-a-vis the environment: “As the first federal agency to publicly report its greenhouse gas emissions, we’ve established an invaluable baseline to guide us as we work to scale back these emissions by 20 percent by 2020.”

In addition to which, they are working to reduce energy use by 30% and petroleum fuel use by 20%, both by 2015.

One way of achieving these goals is through the use of alternatively powered vehicles, like this hydrogen-powered vehicle:

and this three-wheeled electric delivery vehicle, which costs just two cents per mile to operate:

The U.S.P.S. certainly has to take into account things like operating expenses, because it gets no tax dollars for them, relying on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
