The Sound of One Hand Clapping: Consumer Reports & Lexus

By: Gary S. Vasilash

13. May 2010

If you recall, last month Consumer Reports made a “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” judgment vis-à-vis the Lexus GX 460 SUV. You may not recall that the kick in the pants for Toyota occurred on April 13 (it was a Tuesday, so we can’t ascribe it to Friday the 13th bad luck), but you undoubtedly recall the oft-repeated tape of the big Lexus skidding along the pavement in a maneuver that would cause most of us to have a momentary lapse of bowel control.

So what happened on May 7? Well, lots of things, of course. Including the lifting of the “Don’t Buy” by Consumer Reports.

In the past several days, I’ve talked to several people about the end of the ban. And none of them were aware of it. All were aware of the carnival-ride-out-of-control video.

Toyota engineers simply adjusted some software in the Vehicle Stability Control system and voila! back to normal.

Perhaps the lesson in this is that no one wants to run a tape of an SUV just driving along. Something that works as it should tends not to be particularly thrilling.
