The whole idea of a Porsche SUV—the Cayenne—struck many Porsche partisans as completely off the rails. “C’mon,” they said, in effect, “Porsche is about sports cars, lithe and fast, compact and capable, not some big hulking behemoth.”
The people in Stuttgart didn’t listen. The SUV went into production in 2002.
Porsche announced its worldwide sales figures for 2012. And guess what? The best-selling model is the Cayenne. The company sold 6,897 of them last month. That’s 34.2% more than it had sold in October 2011.
In the U.S., the starting MSRP for a Porsche Cayenne is $48,850. Think they make some good margins on that vehicle?
And while that 6,897 number isn’t too revealing in and of itself, it is if you take into account that the total number of Porsche vehicles sold worldwide in October—911, Panamera, Boxster, Cayman, and Cayenne—was 11,688.
That’s right: More than half of all Porsches sold were the SUV.
Naw, a high-end sporty SUV will never work. . . .
