Mercedes GL Cover(age)

While we don’t ordinarily make mention of an award given to a car company by another publication, in this case we are making an exception because, well, it sort of makes a decision we made a few months ago all the more credible.

The decision was about what to put on the cover of the print edition of the September 2012 issue of Automotive Design & Production, and as we had been most impressed with the 2013, second-generation Mercedes-Benz GL-Class sport utility vehicle (SUV), we did this:

And earlier this week, Motor Trend announced that the GL is the 2013 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year. Which is a highly respectable accomplishment.

Motor Trend uses six metrics to determine the winner of the coveted award:

--Advancement in design

--Engineering excellence

--Efficiency

--Safety

--Value

--Performance of intended function

There is testing, as well, such as 0 to 60 mph acceleration and 60 to 0 mph braking, ride and handling, and so on. In all, 11 vehicles undergo the rigors of the assessment.

Edward Loh, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend, said, “We had an extremely competitive field for Motor Trend’s 2013 Sport/Utility of the Year. However, the Mercedes-Benz GL truly outshone the field and emerged as the clear winner by the end of our program. The goal of the award is to name the SUV that best meets our six criteria, and none of the models managed to do that better than the GL.”

It is interesting to note that the first-gen GL, received the 2007 award in the same category.

Kudos to Mercedes.

And we’re feeling a whole lot better about our choice, as well.
