Local Motors and Shell: Changing the Game

By:

16. January 2012

Local Motors, the company that is predicated on creating crowd-sourced vehicles (i.e., using crowd sourcing for the design, engineering and development of vehicles that are then produced in small volumes in geographically dispersed locals), vehicles that are predicated on such values as safety and environmental sensitivity, is working with Shell GameChanger project, for a design contest that will go live on the Local Motors website tomorrow.

It is called “D.R.I.V.E.N.,” for “Design of Relevant and Innovative Vehicles for Energy Needs.” The contest is based on vehicle design for the needs of five very different locations: Amsterdam, Bangalore, Basra, Houston, and Sao Paolo.

While some might be dismissive of what Local Motors is up to (“Sniff, sniff: Only real car companies can develop real cars”), it is interesting to note that last year the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) worked with Local Motors on developing concepts for a combat-support vehicle.

So if you’ve got game as regards design and engineering, go to the Local Motors site tomorrow.
