Does Santa Know About Unimogs?

As we are now officially in the Christmas season, it is worthwhile to take a look at something that relates to this time of year: Christmas trees.

While most people concern themselves as to whether that 7-footer will really fit once that star is placed on top, others are a bit more gargantuan in their approach.

Which brings us to “farmer and agricultural technician” Norbert Emig of Wald-Michelbach, Germany. Mr. Emig specializes in the transport of seriously large conifers, including, of course Christmas trees.

And to accomplish his mission he has a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 400. This 286-hp workhorse has a load capacity of 13.2 tons. It is configured to be able to go through the terrain that one might encounter in a forested area (it has a off-road chassis and a crawling speed of 1.5 km/h) yet with its width of 2.3 meters, it is able to maneuver not only between giant trees, but in urban environments, such as those where some of the trees Mr. Emig harvests need to be delivered.

Case in point is a 3.86-ton, 55.77-foot spruce that Mr. Emig transported from Odenwald to Walldorf. The tree is now in from of the headquarters of German software giant SAP.

Well, at least there’s no ceiling to worry about.
