Audi is the company responsible for putting LED lights in the headlights and daytime running lights of cars and trucks. What started out as a unique, signature design has pretty much become one of those phenomenon like all of the Apple knock-off products that one finds everywhere from drugstores to higher-end electronics stores (i.e., all of those products that have a name beginning with “i”).
Perhaps Audi will bring something else to lighting design, as well. At this year’s CES is unveiled the Sport Quattro laserlight concept.
At this year’s upcoming 24-hour race at Le Mans, it is going to be equipping its R18 e-tron Quattro race car with the real thing: a combination of LED and laser lights. Yes, laser.

The A8 has recently been made available with matrix LED headlights—the most advanced lighting technology for production cars. We’re going to offer it in further models. Our latest development is laser light—even sharper, more powerful and more efficient. We’re equipping the new Le Mans race car with it and will be the first automobile manufacturer to introduce laser light in production cars.”
The matrix LED headlamps have eight LED units per side. Now there is the addition of laser diodes, which are used for high-beams.
According to Audi, the lasers provide approximately twice the lighting range (or ~500 meters) and three times the luminosity of LED high-beams.
