Looking for a high-strength, light-weight material for demanding applications like a diesel engine? If so, check out a new alloy from Carpenter Technology Corp. (cartech.com). Called “PremoMet,” this alloy is said to be a lower-cost alternative to many cobalt-containing steel alloys, yet this ultra-high strength, high-toughness, quenched and tempered alloy steel has the properties—like an ultimate tensile strength of 2,040 MPa and fracture toughness of 88 KIc(MPa(square root)m)—that allows the weight of parts in high-load applications to be reduced by as much as 25%.
The material is available in bar, hollow bar, wire, strip, plate, and billets. It can be plated.
