Although the Saturn Sky Red Line appears to be aggressive, what’s really aggro is what’s found under its hood: a 260-hp, 2-liter turbocharged engine with direct injection technology. This engine, which also produces 260 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2,500 to 5,300 rpm, is also being used in the Pontiac Solstice GXP and the Opel GT, is said to be General Motors’ highest specific output engine ever built: 2.1 hp/in3 of displacement. The Ecotec 2.0-liter Turbo features a dual-scroll turbocharger and dual cam phasing. Because of the demands of the engine in action, the 319 aluminum engine block bulkheads and the bore walls were enlarged compared with the 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with which it shares an architecture. In order to get direct injection, the fuel injectors are mounted in the cylinder head. Among the robust components are a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, cast aluminum pistons, and cast stainless steel exhaust manifolds. The exhaust valves are sodium-filled.
