The 3.7-liter V6 under the hood of the Infiniti G37 is the first to use VVEL—variable valve event and lift. When combined with C-TVC—short for continuous valve timing control—it results in a reduction of up to 10% in CO2 emissions, higher fuel efficiency, better response, and more power when compared to an identical engine without this technology. It eliminates the throttle valves and controls air intake by continuously altering the valve events and lift. The mechanism consists of a rocker arm with twin links that close the intake valves by transferring rotational movement to the output cam via a driveshaft with an eccentric cam. Output cam movement is varied by rotating the control shaft within a DC electric motor and altering the fulcrums of the twin links. This technology, part of Nissan’s Green Program 2010, will be rolled out worldwide.
