In its 28th year as the premier manufacturing technology show in North America, the 2010 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) is being held Sept. 13 to 18 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

In its 28th year as the premier manufacturing technology show in North America, the 2010 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) is being held Sept. 13 to 18 at McCormick Place in Chicago. With over 1,100 exhibitors occupying 1.2-million ft2 of floor space, this event showcases more than 15,000 new machine tools, controls, computers, software, and processes used in the metalworking industry. The show floor isn't just a smorgasbord of new machines and tools; it's an opportunity to gain valuable ideas and insights, network with manufacturing professionals, and find suppliers.

Exhibitors at the show are organized into nine pavilions:

Beyond the tradeshow, the 2010 Industry & Technology Conference includes sessions on exploring innovative technologies, business development and optimization, and workforce efficiency. Specific focus is on materials engineering, machining technology and trends, alternative manufacturing processes, metrology, and plant operations. On September 13 the Industry Inspiration Day luncheon is being held at 12 pm. It features keynote speakers from the aerospace, medical, engineering, and automotive industries. The presenters include: Allan McArtor, chairman and CEO, Airbus Americas; Rene van de Zande, president/CEO, Emergo Group; Denise Bode, president/CEO, American Wind Energy Association; and Jim Tetreault, VP of North American Manufacturing, Ford Motor Company. The Emerging Technology Center—presented in partnership with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME)—showcases the leading manufacturing technologies in 3D with hands-on experiences. Technologies that will be addressed include additive manufacturing, cloud computing, MTConnect, nanotechnology, and micro manufacturing.

Fanuc Robotics—Booth S-8919

Fanuc Robotics (fanucrobotics.com) will have three robots on display. The new M-3iA parallel-link robot is designed to maximize speed and flexibility for assembly, small part handling, and picking applications. It is available in a four or six-axis model and has a work envelope of 1350 × 500 mm. The M-1iA is a lightweight six-axis robot designed for small part handling, high-speed picking, packing, and assembly applications. The M-2000iA/1200 is ideal for heavy-duty material handling and can support a 1350-kg payload.

Enshu USA Corp.—Booth S-9086

The Enshu (enshuusa.com) GE90H horizontal machining center is designed for heavy-duty removal on steel and aluminum. The GE90H can accommodate workpieces 39.3-in. in diameter by 51-in. tall and weighing up to 2,645 lb. It features a 10,000-rpm, 40.2-hp spindle that delivers 420 Nm of torque at the cut. Axes travels are 39.4 in. X, 35.4 in. Y, and 41.3 in. Z. The spindle, ballscrews, and servo motor mounts are refrigerated and temperature controlled within ±1°C for thermal stability

Bosch Rexroth—Booth E-4942

The TS 5 conveyor from Bosch Rexroth (boschrexroth.com) is designed for harsh production environments and heavy loads up to 660 lb. It features a king shaft-powered roller design that requires no lubrication. It can be configured as a pallet or a continuous roller conveyor. Bosch will also display its EcoShape tubular framing system that can be combined with components from Rexroth’s Manual Production Systems (MPS) to create custom workstations, material shuttles, or flow racks.

Mag Industrial Automation Systems—Booth S-8519

The Specht 500/630 horizontal machining center from MAG (mag-ias.com) features linear-motor or ballscrew drives, CAT-40 and HSK-100 tool interfaces, six spindle options, four control options, and three 5-axis configurations. The Specht 500/630 delivers accuracies up to four microns (0.00015 in.) with 260-Nm (192 ft.-lb.) full-torque cuts. It also includes a 10,000-rpm/15-kW/CAT-40 spindle and 40-pocket tool disc and changing unit. MAG will also display its NBV 400 vertical machining center.

Marubeni Citizen-Cincom—Booth S-9419

Marubeni (marucit.com) will display two new Swiss-type lathes from its Cincom Evolution line. The L20E IX has a maximum machining diameter of 20 mm, a maxi-mum machining length of 200 mm/chuck, and can mount up to 32 tools. The K16E has improvements in the rigidity of parts with a maximum machining diameter of 16 mm and maximum machining length of 200 mm./chuck with a motor type RGB.
Siemens PLM—Booth 4040
NX 7 software from Siemens PLM (siemens.com/plm) integrates CAD, CAM, and CAE applications. It includes two new CAM and CMM applications: One is NX CMM Inspection Programming which works automatically from PMI model data. Its CAD features include high-definition technology and new design tools, and its CAE features combine geometry tools with new analysis technology modeling, simulation, automation, and test correlation.
Alfing Corporation—Booth S-8966
Alfing Corporation (alfing.com) will showcase the 14-station MTR 414 H1 Precitrame CNC rotary transfer machine. This machine includes up to 6000-rpm spindles, NC-controlled rotary tables, and 120-mm floating fixtures. The fixture system has a positioning accuracy of 5 µm, and spindles can be configured for horizontal or vertical operation.
Rattunde Corp.—Booth N-6725
The new ACS + CFMcurve sawing and machining center from Rattunde (rattunde-corp.com) performs cold saw cutting, brush deburring, chamfering, machining, washing and drying, inspection, and stacking of metal materials. The ACS sawing function uses electronics, servo motors, and custom software to control the saw blade during cutting. The CFMcurve machining center is a process that simultaneously machines each workpiece end using 12 servo-controlled axes.
Trumpf Inc.—Booth N-6223
Trumpf (trumpf.com) will display its new laser systems. The TruMark 5020 fiber laser marker converts high pulse frequencies into short marking processes and can be used on metal and plastic applications. It features a fiber protection hose and a mechanical lock that prevents the laser beam from discharging between marking procedures. The TruLaser 1030 laser cutting system includes a Trumpf TruCoax 2-kW diffusion-cooled RF laser resonator. It also features a X- and Y-axis working range of 120 and 60 in. respectively and can cut a maximum thickness of 5/8 in. The TruDiode series lasers are now available with an output power of 800, 1000, 2000, and 3000 watts for welding, brazing, hardening, and heat treatment.
Okuma America Corp.—Booth S-8500
Okuma (okuma.com) will display two machining centers. The new GENOS M460-VE vertical machining center has travel measures of 30×18.11×18.11 in., X, Y, Z. The rapid traverse rate is 1,574 ipm. It also includes a 40-taper spindle that reaches up to 12,000 rpm. The LB3000-EX horizontal lathe features the operator-friendly THINC-OSP control that allows it to connect to peripheral equipment and utilize other machine tool accessories.
Mitutoyo America Corp.—Booth E-5126
The Roundtest RA-220 roundness measuring machine from Mitutoyo (mitutoyo.com) features a high rotational accuracy of 0.04+6H/1000 µm, a precision air bearing, and a digital adjustment turntable rated up to 55 lb. Its analysis options include roundness, cylindricity, coaxiality, concentricity, radial turnout, axial runout, squareness to axis and plane, wall thickness deviation, flatness, and parallelism. Mitutoyo will also display the Surftest SJ-210 portable roughness tester.
Kennametal Inc.—Booth W-1522
Kennametal (kennametal.com) will showcase its Beyond Blast insert for milling. This insert channels coolant through the insert, at the interface of the milling cutter and insert, to avoid over heating from friction.
Mitsui Seiki—Booth S-8336
Mitsui Seiki (mitsuiseiki.com) will display its new series of configurable machining centers. The HU100 series features axis travels from 1300 mm in diameter to 2500 mm tall and four, five, or six axes of motion from a rotary, trunnion, or table-on-table. Its fixed spindles range from 6,000 rpm to 25,000 rpm for heavy milling or high-speed applications. The tilt or swivel spindles range from 6,000 rpm to 12,000 rpm. The HU100 series has a work zone capacity of up to 2500 × 2000 mm, and it can hold from 4,400 to 17,500 lb.
Sunnen Products Co.—Booth N-7400
The Sunnen (sunnen.com) SV-400 series vertical CNC honing system is designed for the sizing and finishing of deep bores with diameters from 19 to 200 mm. and parts up to 1,524 mm. long. The SV-400 series features a work envelope of 915×1015 mm and a weight capacity up to 90 kg. (2000 lb.). It also includes a 7.5-kW spindle for fast metal removal of tools with metal-bond cubic boron nitride and diamond abrasives, or standard aluminum oxide and silicon carbide stones.
Sandvik Coromant—Booth W-1500
Sandvik Coromant (sandvik.coromant.com) will display its two new titanium milling insert grades. S30T is designed for speed and tool life. This grade combines micro-grain carbide with a wear-resistant PVD coating for sharp cutting edges that resist fatigue and micro chipping. S40T is developed for difficult conditions and combines cemented carbide with a thin CVD coating to withstand vibrations. Both grades can be used in face, shoulder, long-edge and high feed milling, plunging, profiling, and slot milling applications.
Widia Products Group—Booth W-1452
Widia Products Group (widia.com) will showcase its new inserts for the Widia Victory M1200 milling cutters. The LDJ geometry features rake angles with 12 cutting edges and is designed to be free-cutting. It is available in two grades: THMU for non-ferrous materials, and the TN6501 with TiB2 coating. The LDJ3W features three RH cutting edges and three LH cutting edges. The LDJ3W is also offered in the THMU and TN6501 grades.
Carl Zeiss IMT Corp.—Booth E-5510
The Calypso 5.0 software from Carl Zeiss (zeiss.com) increases measuring efficiency for contact and optical measurements. It facilitates generating measurement plans from 3D models up to 60% faster. The Siemens NX, CATIA V5, and ProE CAD systems are supported.
Walter Tools USA—Booth W-1700
Walter Tools (walter-tools.com) will showcase its new Tiger-tec cutting tool material. Tiger-tec Silver is used in the milling of steel and cast iron. Its new grade, WKP35S, uses a CVD-AL203 coating that provides wear and crack resistance of CVD grades.
Doosan Infracore Machine Tools—Booth S-8100
The VC630 5-axis machining center from Doosan Infracore (doosaninfracore.com) allows for heavy cutting of titanium and Inconel, as well as creating mirror finishes on non-ferrous materials. It includes the dual-contact Big Plus tooling system and a vibration-free spindle motor. The VC630 has up to 43 hp of cutting power and a spindle speed of 20,000 rpm. Doosan will also display the Puma 2100 and 2600 turning centers.
Meister Abrasives—Booth N-6748
The new cDD (CVD-tipped Diamond Dresser) rotary dressing technology from Meister Abrasives (meister-abrasives-usa.com) combines high-quality CVD diamond inserts with a sharp-cutting hybrid diamond matrix to produce dressing tools that maintain sharpness longer. Meister will also display its line of hDD (hybrid diamond dressing) tools and grinding wheels
ATI Industrial Automation—Booth N-6429
ATI Industrial Automation (ati-ia.com) will display two new manual tool changer models. The MC-16 and MC-36 feature a manual one-handed lock and unlock actuation as well as a screw-style locking mechanism with fail-safe features that resist vibration and prevents loosening. The MC-16 has a payload limit of 40 lb. and the MC-36 a limit of 100 lb.
Fixtureworks—Booth W-2346
Fixtureworks (fixtureworks.net) will showcase its Abrasive Diamond Surface Grippers from Fairlane Products (fairlaneproducts.com). The surface grippers are designed for non-slip gripping on smooth or slippery surfaces with minimal clamping force and surface marking. Fixtureworks will also display its manual clamps from Imao (Imao.us). These retractable clamps are made of alloy steel and are available in miniature, heavy-duty, swing, pull, push, rocker, and snap clamps with forces from 150 to 2,250 lb.
Seco Tools, Inc.—Booth W-1564
The Jabro-Solid2 carbide end mills from Seco Tools (secotools.com) range in size from 1/8 to 1 in. and have general machining applications. Their materials include carbon steel, gray cast iron, stainless, and super alloys in both wet and dry applications.
Mazak Corp.—Booth S-8300
The INTEGREX j-Series from Mazak (mazak.com) is designed for multi-tasking machining operations in milling and turning. The series is comprised of three size ranges and performs 4-axis machining simultaneously with 5-axis tool tip positioning.
Murata Machinery USA—Booth S-8574
Murata Machinery (muratec-usa.com) will showcase its twin- and single-spindle automated turning centers. The MT200G/T3 is a new twin opposing-spindle turning machine with three turrets and a gantry loader. It is useful for running complex parts and various part types through one machine.
Euro-Tech Corporation—Booth W-2453
The Kostyrka UHF from Euro-Tech (eurotechcorp.com) is a chucking device that is composed of an axially adjustable piston rod that can be clamped in any position with a clamping sleeve. A series of UHF units can be used for precise fixturing of parts, especially those that are thin-walled or unstable. Euro-Tech will also display the PG 1000 Cutting Tool Inspection System which inspects geometries on twist and step drills, form tools, reamers, taps, and end mills.
