Lasers for Micromachining

Bosch is using ultrashort pulse laser technology to manufacture common-rail diesel injectors and emission sensors. The technology allows laser light to be compressed into tiny segments of time—in the case of the sensor production it is used for only a few picoseconds—with light traveling at only one millimeter at a time, while producing several hundred megawatts of power. As a result, any material that is exposed to the laser evaporates without first becoming hot or melting, eliminating unwanted burrs or thermal side effects. Bosch says the new technology allows the improved accuracy of the emission sensors; usage on injectors will pave the way for manufacture of tiny micro-channels that can deliver fuel more accurately. says the unit let all of the vehicle shareholders see the changes in real time and make a decision on-the-spot. “It saved about six months,” he says.—CAS
