SABIC Innovative Plastics (sabic-ip.com) suggests that by using plastics for hybrid and electric vehicle powertrain systems, weight saves can be achieved. For example Noryl polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and Valox polybutadiene terephthalate (PBT) resins reduce weight in battery frames and housings by replacing steel with plastic. This contributes a great environmental benefit, as traditional battery packs can add up to 300 kg. (661 lb.) on a mid-sized car.

In order to maintain dimensional stability within the battery cell structure, Noryl and Noryl GTX resins offer lower mold shrink and warp, lower moisture uptake, and a more stable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)—all of which protect from changes such as temperature, humidity, and load without compromising chemical resistance to common battery coolant fluids.

For battery electric vehicles, SABIC’s Ultem polyetherimide (PEI) and Valox PBT resins provide high heat and chemical resistance for optimal temperature control of liquid cooling in a battery pack. In hybrid electric vehicles, the LNP Faradex compounds provide electromagnetic interference/radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI) shielding to prevent interference from electrical components such as inverters, electronic control units, and battery management system.
