Back in 2009, when Porsche executives decided to make the Panamera, the four-door sport sedan, the public response wasn’t quite as wide-eyed with concern as was the decision to make the Cayenne SUV. But the company went ahead and decided that it would build the Panamera in its plant in Leipzig, where it was building the Cayenne and Carrera GT. Explaining the rational, then-president and CEO Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking said, “Right from the beginning in the production of the Cayenne and the Carrera GT, our Leipzig Plant has proven impressively that it is in a position to build premium cars of the highest quality.”
So they added a 25,000-m2 production hall, expanded the assembly area, and built a Pilot and Analysis Center and a workshop for apprentice training.
Earlier this year, the 100,000th Panamera, an S E-Hybrid, was produced. Yes, a hybrid Porsche was thought to be as bizarre as a sedan or SUV, yet the Porsche system is rated at 416 hp and yet on the European cycle has a fuel consumption of 3.1 liters per 100 km (76 mpg). Top speed 270 km/h (167.8 mph).
It is worth noting that the Leipzig plant also produces Panamera S and Panamera 4S models. And here’s something somewhat controversial about those two models: the new generation sedans use a 3.0-liter V6 in place of the previous 4.8-liter V8. The V6 produces 420 hp, 20 more than the V8. Go figure.
