Ford Motor Co. and Moscow-based partner OJSC Sollers plan to add production of the Ford EcoSport mini SUV at one of their two factories in Tatarstan, Russia, in the second half of next year.

Ford says the added output will help it meet the country’s growing SUV demand while avoiding heavy tariffs on imported autos. The companies did not disclose production volume targets for the EcoSport.

The 50:50 joint venture also broke ground earlier this week on a $274 million engine plant in Elabuga, Tatarstan. The facility will begin making three versions of Ford’s 1.6-liter Duratec engine in December 2015.

The new factory will have initial annual capacity of 105,000 engines, which could later be expanded to 200,000 units. The engine plant is near a Ford Sollers assembly plant, which began building the Ford Explorer midsize SUV last month.

The partners also produce the Kuga compact crossover (known as the Escape in North America) and five other cars, MPVs and vans at three Russian assembly plants.
