Chrysler Group LLC is developing a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 Hemi engine that is expected to produce about 640 hp, according to Automotive News.
The engine program, code named Hellcat, was reported in early May by Allpar.com.
The Chrysler enthusiast Web site says the Hellcat originally was intended to power the 2014 Barracuda SRT8 sport coupe. That project has been delayed until 2015 and will ride on a new chassis being co-developed by Chrysler owner Fiat SpA to carry a new midsize Alfa Romeo sedan.
Now, according to AN and Allpar.com, the Hellcat engine will debut a year from now in the 2015 Challenger sport coupe, paired with Chrysler’s new eight-speed automatic transmission. The model is being developed to help the Challenger compete with the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Ford Mustang Cobra.
