The importance of voice recognition for automotive infotainment systems is going to more than double by 2019, according to a report by IMS Research (imsresearch.com).
“The World Market for Automotive User Interfaces” notes that revenues for voice recognition systems were about $81-million in 2011 and projects that they will rise to $170-million by 2019.
Looked at another way: IMS Research forecasts that approximately 55% of all vehicles sold globally will have voice recognition by 2019.
The research firm anticipates that with technological developments, voice recognition will go beyond today’s navigation, music, and phone call support to things like controlling the HVAC systems.
There are two key drivers of voice technology in vehicles. One is that consumers are becoming more comfortable and familiar with it through the use of things like Apple’s Siri on their smart phones. Another is that there is likely to be more legislation regarding the use of handheld devices in the phone.
And let’s face it: the addiction that many people have for Facebook is not likely to wane between now and 2019.
