A family of intelligent acceleration sensors for front and side crash detection in advanced airbag systems has been developed by Freescale Semiconductors. The Xtrinsic MMA65xxKW family of accelerometers is designed to be integrated into a vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU) as main crash sensors. They’re based on high-aspect-ratio micro-electromechanical systems (HARMEMS), which offer better precision and a wider dynamic range compared to current sensors, which means enhanced performance. The sensors are expected to enter production in Q2 2012.
